Objective 2:
Synthesize and integrate varied sources to inform decisions and create solutions and appropriate problem-solving strategies congruent with the social work knowledge base.

The assignment I have chosen to demonstrate competency of Program Objective 2 is the Chattanooga Truth Commission that was completely arranged and organized by the UTC Senior Social Work class of 2008. There is not a paper to post for this assignment; this was a community event that took place in December of 2007 at the Partnership for Families, Children, and Adults on McCallie Ave in Chattanooga, TN. The class has ties to an organization called the Poor People’s Economic Human Rights Campaign (PPEHRC), and had the opportunity to work with them at the United States Social Forum in Atlanta, GA in the Summer of 2007. PPEHRC organizes Truth Commissions across the United States to allow people to speak freely about violations of their Economic Human Rights, as outlined by the United Nations. I was a part of the committee responsible for organizing the first ever Truth Commission in Chattanooga. In order to organize this event, each member involved had to be creative, as we organized this event in a very short time and began the endeavor with absolutely no money. We had to utilize a wide variety of our social work skills on this project. I, in particular, was responsible for managing the group’s budget, fundraising for the event, and securing food, water, and safety for the event.

I have uploaded documents that were created by the class to educate the public on this event. Included in these documents are a statement about what a truth commission is, a statement about why a truth commission should be held in Chattanooga, and a press release.
